Assembly member Tony Mendoza was a keynote speaker who started his speech by discussing the State Budget Deficit and the possibility of about $26 Billion of additional budget cuts in the fiscal year of 2011-2012.
He discussed budget cuts in several sectors of state government that would seriously impact education, including school districts and community colleges, which he said should adjust their spending according to the State's reduced budget plan starting in September.
He also said that the Governor proposed to legislators the extension of tax increments (personal income tax, vehicle tax, sales tax, and others) for another 5 years in order to raise $12 Billion in revenue to help the budget deficit. The proposal will go to ballot in June of this year if approved by the state legislature.
Most attendees worried about additional budget cuts and demanded answers to their questions for almost an hour.
Chamber President James Kang urged all attendees to continue to attend future meetings so that the Chamber can serve them better to provide the most current economic information and to promote business activities in the city.
