Cerritos Optimist hold Girls Oratorical Contest

The Cerritos Optimist Club held its annual Oratorical Contest for girls at the Cerritos Library Feb. 24. The contest was open to both middle and high school students. Ten girls competed in the contest representing Artesia, Cerritos, Gahr and Whitney High Schools, plus Haskell and Ross Middle Schools.
An estimated 100 people were in attendance, including parents, teachers, members of the ABC School Board, and Optimists. The three judges were retired ABC teacher Betty Hyatt, former Artesia High band director Victor Solotoff, and Joy Darling, a former United States Attorney.
“If I Were Leader of the Free World” was the topic of discussion. First place winner was Avita Kapyur, a senior at Whitney High School. Tonya Lee, a sophomore from Cerritos High School, won second place. Finishing third was senior Marbella Borja of Artesia High School.
In addition to receiving gold, silver and bronze medals, monetary prizes in the amount of $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place were awarded to the top three contestants. The first place winner will move on to the Optimist Zone Contest, which will be held at Mayfair High School in April. The Boys Oratorical Contest will be held Mar. 3 at the Cerritos Library.
