Summer School Offered in Hawaiian Gardens

On June 28 summer school began at four schools in the ABC Unified School District serving students in Hawaiian Gardens. The four schools were able to offer summer school due to a significant contribution from the City of Hawaiian Gardens in the amount of $88,500.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu said this is the second year there were not sufficient funds from the State to provide summer school in the District. The donation from Hawaiian Gardens made it possible for summer school classes to be offered at four schools. Aloha ES, Furgeson ES, Hawaiian ES and Melbourne ES who opened their doors to hundreds of students on June 28. Former Mayor Mike Gomez and Councilmember Michiko Canada along with District staff visited the students at the schools on opening day.
The summer classes involve English language development, and intervention classes in English language arts, and Math to the students. The three hour program also provides a nutritious snack and physical activities during the four weeks of summer school.
