New LED Lights Adorn Public Right-of-Ways in Cerritos

Caption ENVIRON International Corp. Associate Carmen Teng receives Certificate of Recognition from Mayor Joseph Cho and Council for her company’s assistance in the citywide lighting replacement project.

Cerritos, in conjunction with Jenn Feng New Energy Co., Ltd. is nearing completion on a citywide lighting replacement of 405 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH) fixtures with custom Jenn Feng Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures. The new lighting is now brightening Cerritos community centers, parks, the civic center and over two dozen additional locations in the City.
The lighting fixtures were provided to Cerritos at no cost. Eight United States cities received the free LED fixtures from Jenn Feng New Energy Co., Ltd. as part of a mitigation project undertaken in connection with the settlement of an enforcement action, United States v. McCulloch, et al., taken on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Air Act. The value of the light fixtures is approximately $435,900.
The primary benefits of LEDs include reduced energy consumption, longer life and improved light dispersion. The longer life also reduces maintenance costs. According to product specifications, Jenn Feng fixtures have a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours, which is approximately three times the lifespan of equivalent HPS or MH fixtures. All of the existing light fixtures have been or will be replaced with LEDs that achieve equivalent or in many cases improved luminance.
The lights will save the City approximately 154,000kWh per year, resulting in an energy savings of as much as 50 percent or about $24,000 annually. In addition to reducing energy consumption, Cerritos will receive another environmental benefit: its carbon footprint will be reduced by approximately 112,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually.Cerritos Mayor Joseph Cho expressed the community’s appreciation and said that the new lighting “will make our city brighter, reduce energy consumption and provide more visibility to enhance security that will assist law enforcement personnel in doing their jobs more effectively.”
Director of Public Works Hal Arbogast said, “The city will have enhanced lighting all around Cerritos and 370 lights have already been changed with about 40 more to go. The new LED
Lights will save the city about $25,000 annually.”
Mayor-Pro-Tem Laura Lee said, “The entire environmental project would have cost the city more than $435,000, and I am proud that I was able to bring the interested parties together to benefit our city’s parks, community buildings and public art displays.”
Approximately 370 fixtures have been installed, and the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of August.
