Cerritos girls shine brightly in spring/summer soccer tournaments

#5 Juliana Orozco tackles opponent while Dorene Navarro and Madison Wells help out.

As World Cup fever rages on, the American Youth Soccer Organization Region 54 Cerritos All Star Girls have continued to represent the community proudly by delivering great soccer displays throughout Orange County and beyond. Led by head coach Joe Contreras and assistants Billy Cevallos and Antonio Paniagua, the Cerritos Girls Under 14 stars recently won the prestigious Swallows Classic in San Juan Capistrano on June 26 and 27 by defeating the San Juan Capistrano stars by a score of 3-1 in the championship game.
After falling behind 1-0 early on, Cerritos netted an equalizer after Dorene Navarro coolly converted a penalty kick before the halftime whistle. Cerritos dominated the second half, pulling ahead with sensational free kick scores by Tiffany Castillo and Reyann Gonzalez to secure the first place medals. San Juan Capistrano was a team made up mostly of girls that earlier in the year had finished second in the AYSO California State Championships.
The Swallows Classic win wrapped up an outstanding year of soccer for the Cerritos Girls. The team participated in eight different competitions and brought home eight medals. The girls won three tournament championships and placed in every single competition. In addition to the Swallows Classic, the Cerritos girls won the Summer Kickoff Classic Tournament in South Ontario on June 10 and the Hi-Five Tournament in Fountain Valley in January. Led by top scorers Madison Wells, Rachel Cardenas, and Tiffany Castillo and an iron-clad defense led by Raena Ramirez and Shamara Mustafa, this group of girls finished the year with 30 wins, 7 draws, and only five losses from 42 games played.
The girls played their best soccer during the Cypress Memorial Day Tournament, when the team posted four straight shutouts before coming from behind in the semifinals to beat a tough Culver City team 3-2 in overtime. The team proudly earned a second place medal following a grueling championship against perennial powerhouse Corona. Wiser from the experience, the Cerritos posted a perfect tournament record at the South Ontario tourney en route to a 2-1 win over Chino Hills in the championship game.
In addition to the aforementioned players, the Cerritos Girls Under 14 midfield features the strong trio of Jenny Cevallos, Juliana Orozco, Vanessa Marquez, plus the tireless defense of Thea Cortez and Rachel Udabe and calming influence of fullback Alexis Contreras. There were no England-style gaffes from the Cerritos goalkeeping duo of Valerie Paniagua and Reyann Gonzalez. Instead the two talented young keepers locked down the nets, allowing only 10 goals in the final 18 games of the season. Meanwhile, the team scored over 40 goals during that same 18-game span.
The Cerritos Girls Under 12 team coached by Robert Castro also enjoyed great success this season, winning the Mission Viejo Classic and the Camarillo Section 10 Cup. Sign-ups for the Cerritos Region 54 Fall 2010 season are now underway. Sign ups will take place on July 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Peak Park on 7225 El Dorado Drive in Buena Park and Cerritos Sports Complex at 19900 Bloomfield Avenue in Cerritos.
