For the past month, the four Cerritos Girls Softball Association All-Star teams have been getting used to playing together and preparing for one of the most important events of every summer. That time has come as the teams will participate in the Amateur Softball Association Los Angeles/South Bay ‘B’ District Championships.
Last weekend in the Corona Tournament, the 12-Under Legacy All-Stars got back on the winning track and won their third tournament of the summer. The Legacy knocked off Santa Fe Springs 10-1 and tied Fontana 3-3 in pool play action before crushing Corona 10-4 and Moreno Valley 7-2 in the first two playoff games. In the finals, the team was tested against Rialto but prevailed 5-4.
The Legacy rallied from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits but the game wasn’t preserved until the top of the seventh when a strikeout with the bases loaded and a running catch in the outfield won the game. The Legacy enter the Districts with a 14-3 record in four tournaments and will play El Segundo today at the Discovery Sports Complex in Downey.
The 10-Under All-Stars took second place in the Chino Hills Tournament, falling to Long Beach Heartwell 2-1 in the championship game. The team had previously beat Rancho Cucamonga 2-1 and Chino Hills 5-1 in pool play action and Eastvale 5-1 and La Mirada 3-2 in the playoffs. The 10-Under All-Stars have also won 14 tournament games this summer and open the Districts today against the winner of the San Pedro/Paramount game today at Independence Park in Downey.
The 8-Under All-Stars will face San Pedro today at Independence Park while the 14-Under All-Stars square off against North Torrance today at Rio San Gabriel Park. Last summer, the Cerritos 12-Under Gold All-Stars and 14-Under All-Stars advance out of the Districts to the state tournament.
